Fulbright Specialist Program

Press Release
Bridge to Success: Building Skills for Tomorrow’s Leaders
Dr. Robert F. DeFinis’s Fulbright experience in Sri Lanka stands as a powerful example of international collaboration, professional exchange, and meaningful impact. Rooted in the mission of the Fulbright Program, one of the world’s most prestigious global exchange initiatives, his journey reflects a commitment not only to knowledge sharing but also to building bridges across cultures and systems. Established in 1946, the Fulbright Program promotes mutual understanding between nations through educational and cultural exchange, and Dr. DeFinis’s work in Sri Lanka embodies that mission in action.

On March 9, 2026, Dr. DeFinis embarked on an ambitious, month-long tour across the country as a Fulbright Scholar Specialist. Hosted by the American Alumni Association of Sri Lanka in partnership with the Fulbright Commission of Sri Lanka, his work reached a wide and diverse audience. Over the course of the program, he delivered 19 workshops to teachers, students, police officers, and community partners - demonstrating both the breadth of his expertise and the wide-ranging need for professional development across sectors. His travels took him to key regions across Sri Lanka, including Colombo, Kandy, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Ampara, Matara, Nuwara Eliya, Vavuniya, and Battaramulla. This extensive travel allowed him to engage with communities across geographic, cultural, and economic lines, providing a truly national perspective on Sri Lanka’s opportunities and challenges.

A central theme of Dr. DeFinis’s work was the urgent need to develop soft skills as a cornerstone of Sri Lanka’s continued growth. As the country positions itself within a competitive global economy, technical knowledge alone is no longer sufficient. Employers increasingly demand competencies such as communication, leadership, adaptability, problem-solving, and emotional intelligence. Through workshops like Career Readiness and Workforce Competitiveness, Command Under Pressure, Entrepreneurship and Innovations for Economic Impact, and Finding Your Leadership Voice, Dr. DeFinis helped participants understand how these skills translate into real-world success. His sessions on Learning Beyond the Classroom, Preparing for the 21st Century Workforce, and Teaching That Moves the Needle further emphasized the role of education systems in cultivating these essential capabilities.

Beyond the classroom and training sessions, Dr. DeFinis engaged in meaningful dialogue with leaders across business, education, nonprofit organizations, and government. These conversations provided insight into both local priorities and global pressures shaping Sri Lanka’s future, from workforce development and economic resilience to education reform and public-sector leadership. In doing so, he not only shared expertise but also gained a deeper understanding of how the best global practices can be adapted to local contexts. Equally impactful was his immersion in Sri Lanka’s rich and vibrant culture. Known for its warmth, hospitality, and diversity, Sri Lanka offers a unique blend of traditions, languages, and histories. From the bustling energy of Colombo to the cultural heritage of Kandy and the serene landscapes of Nuwara Eliya, the experience highlighted the country’s deep sense of identity and resilience. These cultural connections reinforced the core purpose of the Fulbright experience: fostering mutual respect and understanding across borders.

In total, Dr. DeFinis’s Fulbright journey was more than a professional engagement; it was a transformative exchange of ideas, perspectives, and relationships. By equipping individuals with critical soft skills, engaging leaders in meaningful dialogue, and embracing Sri Lanka's cultural richness, his work contributed to a broader vision of sustainable development and global collaboration.
