sWhat Makes an Impactful Teacher Mentorship Program?
By: Robert F. DeFinis, Ed.D.

There are many thoughts on teacher mentorship programs. I have seen very enthusiastic attempts to create, implement and evaluate such programs. What often happens, unfortunately, is it becomes a “check the box” activity for the mentor and mentee. Schools (primary through post-secondary) should be very thoughtful and intentional when mapping out a formal teacher mentorship program. Creating a teacher mentorship program can be a fantastic way to support new and developing teachers, build a collaborative school culture, and improve overall teaching effectiveness. Here are some key tips to ensure a successful and impactful mentorship program:

Define Clear Goals and Objectives
  • Align with School Vision: Establish program goals that support the school’s vision and educational objectives. Whether focused on reducing teacher turnover, improving instructional skills, or fostering a supportive culture, clear goals will provide direction.
  • Set Specific Objectives: For example, you might aim to increase new teacher retention by 20% or reduce first-year teacher stress levels by providing instructional resources.
Identify and Select Quality Mentors
  • Choose Experienced Teachers: Select mentors with a track record of effective teaching, empathy, and a genuine interest in supporting others.
  • Offer Mentor Training: Train mentors on effective coaching, active listening, and conflict resolution. This training should also include an overview of the program’s goals, confidentiality expectations, and best practices.
Pair Mentors and Mentees Thoughtfully
  • Consider Teaching Style and Subject Compatibility: Matching mentors and mentees based on teaching style, grade level, or subject matter can lead to stronger relationships and more relevant guidance.
  • Encourage Compatibility Over Proximity: While location is a factor, prioritize pairing by compatibility.
